What do these Cats Symbolize?

As far as the cowardly lion from the Wizard of Oz, I think the point of his character was supposed to be irony. Lions are generally regarded as "king" like and very powerful. The lion in Oz was just the opposite, he was cowardly. Irony exists because of the general mentality that a lion should be brave not a scared -y cat.
