Why can't rappers ever go by their first name?

obie trice, real name no gimmicks... and eminem stands for marshell mathers. i think its just a moniker, like "Sonny Boy" Williams or "Lightning" Hopkins, or even Satchmo for that matter. In music people get given nicknames to prove they have paid their dues, so it probably has something to with that
