English question about um synonyms i guess?

is there a word for 'become good at'? i thought the word 'master' was.. as in 'i mastered the skills of whatever' but apperantly its not:$:$ lol so like a word i can use in a sentence like 'he ____ mathematics' or something, pleaaaaaaaase:$
