Is running for political office more difficult for women?

I am considering making a run at local politics first, then perhaps federal. I have seen the frustration of many women as they try to be heard, try to express a point of view, especially if it goes against the status quo. I have seen women in the house of commons here in Ottawa treated extra disrespectfully and am told that my personal history could come under a microscope. I am trying to link up with other strong women to get a toe hold but wonder if I should just give up on this dream. I am courageous and forthright but also pretty sensitive.
