How to become friends with a guy you like?

i have liked this guy in my year for ages now (i mean ages) anyway i would like to be friends first cause it would be a bit weird just asking him to go out. we are both shy though which doesnt help. also he might now i lke him cause i friend told his friend but im not sure . im so confused please help
